Excerpts of Interviews and Change of Direction
In a 2014 interview, Turner revealed that she initially had little control over her image as a pop artist, as her label steered her towards a more pop sound and asked her to hide her Jamaican patois accent. She declared:“ For me, I’ m a Jamaican-Canadian, I don’ t know, for us cultural girls, we always go and just speak the dialect( patois) and it’ s part of my everyday life, but in my interviews, they’ d say‘ don’ t come with that accent’.” She explained that although she could hide her accent, having to do so was“ interesting”. She added that she had always understood that in the early days of the industry, you lose control, but the goal is to regain it with time and desire.

Following the release of“ MJ” in 2014, Kreesha Turner found new direction under the guidance of Nick Cannon and the Ncredible imprint, then signed with Republic Records, which led to a shift in her musical style towards dancehall / reggae. This shift marked a return to her roots, a sound she had explored in the underground hiphop scene before her mainstream success. She described the new sound as“ aggressive and frontal, full of audacity and completely‘ swagged out’” and“ very hip hop”. She felt that this new sound was a more authentic representation of herself.
