His ambition wasn’ t simply to be recognized as an“ African designer.” He wanted to be recognized as a fashion designer, plain and simple— with the same creative freedom as any designer in Paris, London, Milan, or New York. Patou embraced his roots without letting them become a cage. This philosophy would become the heart of PatouStyle.

A native of Douala, he grew up in an environment where two passions would shape his life: soccer and elegance. Soccer was his biggest dream at first. Stories about his youth often mention the Akwa neighborhood, the Alfred Saker Middle School in Deido, and his time with Cameroonian clubs such as Caïman de Douala and Tonnerre de Yaoundé. At that time, Patrice didn’ t yet see himself curating a clothing collection; instead, he envisioned a career on the soccer field. But the other influence was already there. His mother. In an interview published in 2014, Patou Manga recalled the care she took in how she dressed herself and her children, especially when it was time to go to church on Sundays. This appreciation for presentation, clean clothing, a well-put-together look, and elegant details seems to have been his first real lesson in style. His sense of elegance, then, did not originate in Parisian store windows. It began in everyday life. Through observation. In the very simple idea that the way a man presents himself to the world already says something about him. In the mid-1990s, around 1994 – 95, Patrice left Cameroon for France. He was still playing soccer. According to his wife’ s later account, it was actually soccer that brought him to France, where he played notably for Créteil before realizing that his athletic career wasn’ t heading in the direction he’ d hoped. So, he reinvented himself.
