Those who are criticized for not telling their story well, even though they have so often been denied the right to tell it themselves. This vast community has a grand name: the global Black diaspora. Flashmag was born from this idea.
A magazine is like an open window
In the beginning, there are probably sheets of paper, photographs, and articles edited late into the night. There are unanswered calls, advertising promises that never materialize, postponed meetings, and bills that arrive before the revenue. Above all, there is that silent anxiety familiar to anyone who creates something from almost nothing: the fear that the first issue will also be the last.
In the history of the Black community press, this fear is not imaginary.
How many magazines have bravely launched only to disappear after a few issues? They had striking titles, grand ambitions, and covers filled with faces rarely seen in the mainstream media. They sought to tell the stories of the artists, entrepreneurs, intellectuals, families, organizations, and everyday people who were building the community without ever making it into the history books.
Then the difficulties set in.
The cost of printing. Weak distribution networks. A lack of advertisers. The absence of patient capital. Volunteer work that eventually wears down even the most passionate contributors. Doors that remain closed. Partners who love the project but hesitate to fund it. Readers who applaud the initiative, while sometimes forgetting that an independent media outlet cannot survive on encouragement alone.

Many Black publications did not die for lack of talent. They died for lack of oxygen.
Their disappearance often happened quietly. One issue was missing from the newsstand. Then another. The website stopped being updated. Social media went silent. A few months later, all that remained was an old cover, a yellowed photograph, or the memory of a launch event where everyone had promised to be there for the next issue.
Flashmag could have met the same fate.
