Encouraging and celebrating the success of more nations in sports can also have implications beyond the field of play . It can promote a more multipolar world where no one nation holds overwhelming influence . This , in turn , can lead to a fairer application of international laws and standards , reducing the tendency of one nation to impose its will unilaterally on the rest of the world . The comparison between Germany ’ s success at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the continued dominance of the USA in world sports highlights the importance of diverse excellence in shaping international perceptions . While the 1936 Olympics were used by the Nazi regime to promote a dangerous ideology , modern US dominance in sports similarly reinforces a narrative of exceptionalism that contributes , whether we like it or not , to global tensions and the asymmetrical warfare that has become the US forte in a world where information and criticism increasingly seem to influence the choices of politicians who more than ever are compelled to manipulate the masses and bluster to continue to uphold an unjust and decadent order .
