Act IV: 2035— Organized Silence The student searching for his ancestors
Marcus Chen was 47 now. He was still teaching, but his class had changed. He no longer talked about the Tuskegee Airmen— it was no longer part of the curriculum. One day, a Black student named Destiny stayed behind after class.“ Mr. Chen, my grandmother tells me stories about Black pilots during the war. But I can’ t find anything in the books. Is she making it up?” Marcus felt something break inside him. He closed the door, knowing he was taking a risk. Classrooms now had“ educational monitoring systems.”“ Your grandmother didn’ t lie to you. Everything she told you is true. The Buffalo Soldiers. The Tuskegee Airmen. It’ s all true.”“ Then why isn’ t it in the books?” Marcus hesitated. How could he explain to a teenager that her country was systematically erasing the history of her ancestors?“ Because there are people who think that certain stories should no longer be told.” Destiny stared at him with eyes too old for her age.“ They want us to forget that we’ ve always been here, is that it?” Marcus nodded, unable to speak.
