The trio released * One in a Million *( 1996), an album that literally redefined the sound of R & B for the coming decade— with syncopated, futuristic rhythms that were almost otherworldly for the time. The album sold over eight million copies worldwide. Aaliyah was no longer just a singer: she became a genre all her own. The press dubbed her the“ Princess of R & B,” and later, the“ Baby Girl” of an entire generation. Decades later, this period would be regularly cited as one of the cornerstones of contemporary R & B.
The teenager whose career initially seemed tied to R. Kelly now had a world of her own. And that world was instantly recognizable.

Aaliyah realized early on that her career could extend beyond music. In 2000, she landed one of the lead roles in * Romeo Must Die *, alongside Jet Li and DMX.
She also contributed to the soundtrack. The song“ Try Again,” produced by Timbaland, became her biggest hit in the U. S. and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. She then starred in * Queen of the Damned *, playing the vampire queen Akasha, and her future in film suddenly seemed bright. Even bigger projects were on the horizon. At the same time, she recorded her third, self-titled album, simply called * Aaliyah *. It was released on July 7, 2001. No one knew at the time that it would be her musical legacy. When * Queen of the Damned * was released after her death, the film topped the North American box office during its opening weekend. Twenty-five years after its release, the album is still regarded as remarkably modern. In July 2026, Forbes once again highlighted how its textures, vocal restraint, and blend of R & B, pop, and electronic production remain audible in contemporary music. One of Aaliyah’ s favorite songs on this album is“ Rock the Boat.” She insisted that it be released as a single. It was for this song that she traveled to the Bahamas to film the music video.
