A little girl who couldn’ t stand being told“ no”
Aaliyah was born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn and grew up mainly in Detroit. Very early on, her family realized that she wasn’ t just a child who liked to sing. She took lessons. She performed in shows. Around the age of ten, she appeared on * Star Search *, one of the major talent shows of the time. She didn’ t win. That detail seems almost symbolic today.
For Aaliyah would spend her short life turning rejections into stepping stones. Very quickly, one name began circulating around her with particular insistence: that of her uncle, Barry Hankerson. A shrewd businessman and visionary in the music industry, Hankerson was married to the legendary Gladys Knight— and it was through this unlikely connection that Aaliyah, then barely eleven years old, found herself one evening on a stage in Las Vegas, singing alongside a soul icon in front of thousands of spectators. Her family closely guided her and managed her schedule, balancing school, singing, dancing, and travel. Despite already having a professional career, she continued her studies and eventually graduated from the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts with excellent grades Hankerson, convinced of his niece’ s potential, founded his own label, Blackground Records, in 1993, solely to advance the young girl’ s career. He enlisted a young, up-and-coming producer named R. Kelly to write, compose, and produce Aaliyah’ s debut album. * Age Ain’ t Nothing But a Number * was released in 1994. Aaliyah was fifteen years old. The album was a commercial triumph— selling over three million copies in the United States and certified double platinum. The single“ Back & Forth” climbed to number five on the Billboard Hot 100. A star was born.
