The people he trained are working today. Some are making films. That’ s what a true legacy is— not a statue, not a speech, but people who carry on. Bassek Ba Kobhio was not just a filmmaker. He was an advocate for the African image. A man convinced that African societies must tell their own stories, defend their imaginations, and preserve their values in the face of cultural homogenization. Bassek Ba Kobhio’ s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2026, in his hometown of Nindjé, where it all began— a child of Sanaga Maritime who dreamed of cinema and turned that dream into an institution.
