The next morning, the major news networks devote their first twenty minutes to … an animated map showing the front lines, an analysis by a retired general, and the U. S. State Department’ s response. The Al-Jamal family, meanwhile, gets one line. One line.

This is no coincidence. Nor is it an isolated lapse in judgment. It is a symptom of a profound— and disturbing— transformation in war journalism. War, as it is portrayed to us today, increasingly resembles a giant chess game: strategic, cold, fascinating. And less and less like what it really is: a death sentence pronounced on flesh-and-blood human beings
