Over 150 years ago, John Bright, the eminent British politician renowned for his passionate eloquence and liberal commitment, said,“ War is the concentrated fusion of all the horrors, atrocities, crimes and sufferings of which mankind is capable- and it is often those who have never fought, driven by self-interest or ambition, who drag peoples into these abysses.” Without wishing to be anathema, it would be wise to add that the lack of awareness of the value of human lives mowed down by wars is a consequence of the consistency of a biased popular memory in the Western hemisphere.
The proselytizing wars that led to slavery and colonization were justified and justifiable in a logic of salvation for the good of the natives. More recent wars to impose democracy or prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction are even more so. Which begs the question: is moralistic language, disguising zany agendas of imperialist domination, the miracle panacea that absolves all sins of war?
