What’ s more, Lopes has been an essential creative force behind TLC’ s themes and sound. She spoke candidly about the financial difficulties faced by the band despite its multi-platinum success, explaining how industry mismanagement and exploitation affected the group:“ TLC went broke selling 10 million albums.... I was only a third of the band. If the band doesn’ t want to do it, I have to do it for myself”( Jordan Cooper, 2019). Her determination to regain control by establishing her own management and production channels illustrates her pioneering role in artist empowerment.
In interviews, Lopes also spoke of the cultural imprint left by TLC, pointing out that other artists had imitated their style. She remarked of contemporary artists like Aaliyah and Total that“ a lot of bands since CrazySexyCool have copied the vibe we have musically”( Jordan Cooper, 2019). Far from feeling threatened, Lopes welcomed the tribute with pride, declaring,“ It makes us feel good. We’ re forerunners. The day we stop creating trends, we’ ll fall”.
Challenges and resilience
Despite his huge commercial success, Lopes has not hesitated to talk about his difficulties, both personal and professional. In a 1995 interview with The Face, she openly addressed the toxic dynamics she endured, including an abusive relationship with NFL player Andre Rison, which culminated in the infamous arson incident.
