Flashmag! Issue 160 May 2025
Born Lisa Nicole Lopes on May 27, 1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lisa was raised in a home deeply marked by musical influence and family challenges. Her father, Ronald Lopes Sr, was a staff sergeant in the U. S. Army, and her mother, Wanda Denise( née Andino), was a seamstress. Lisa’ s heritage was very diverse, encompassing Cape Verdean, Mexican, Portuguese and African-American origins, reflecting the varied backgrounds of her parents: her father had Cape Verdean and Portuguese roots, and her mother Mexican. This mix of cultures helped shape her unique identity and artistic sensibility.
Lisa’ s father was a strict, domineering figure who ran the household with military-style discipline, which she described as a“ boot camp” environment, making her upbringing both challenging and formative. Despite this rigidity, music was an ever-present refuge; her family formed the gospel trio The Lopes Kids, in which Lisa participated from an early age, nurturing her early love of performing and songwriting.
The family dynamic was complex, marked by her parents’ separation and her father’ s death in 1991, events that intensified Lisa’ s sense of responsibility and fueled her determination to pursue her creative dreams.
This background instilled in her both the resilience and ambition that propelled her through the challenges of stardom and personal trials.
