for oppressed peoples , refusing to believe that their economic comfort in the West is intimately linked to a most dictatorial neo-colonial policy , in the plundering of natural resources of Third World countries , and the silencing by the most violent methods of any attempt to break free from it , including using the stratagem of democracy . Given the above , it is logical to think that democracy as imposed by the West could never thrive , as there is a blatant denial of sincerity in the intentions , which has since manifested itself through support for pro-Western regimes like that of Paul Kagame in Rwanda , who , in power for 30 years , is far from being a saintly example of democracy and good governance , with the scandalous role he plays in the destabilization and servile exploitation of the Great Lakes region by Western companies , which since have been gorging on mineral resources acquired through the genocide of local populations . This system limits the monetary sovereignty of African countries and is often criticized for hindering their economic development . This situation illustrates how structures inherited from colonization continue to harm the prosperity of African countries , despite speeches about democracy and development .
