Sara Alexandra Lima Tavares was born February 1st 1978 in Lisbon Portugal , composer , guitarist and percussionist . She was raised in Lisbon by a secondgeneration Portuguese of Cape Verdean descent , a world traveler identity that could be seen in her artistry . she composed African- , Portuguese- and North Americaninfluenced music . She grew up admiring American singers like Aretha Franklin , Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway ; learned English ; and delved into gospel music .
Tavares ' s parents ’ immigrants from Cape Verde settled in Almada in the 1970s . While still a child , she was left in the care of an old woman when her father left the family to find a greener pasture in the USA , and her mother moved to the south of the country with her younger siblings Tavares talent was first noticed as a teenager , while in the 1990s on SIC ' s " Chuva de Estrelas " talent show , she performed a song by Whitney Houston " One Moment in Time ". That same year , she won the Festival da Canção , that earned her a slot in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest at the age of 16 .
