The French and international press has often portrayed him as an "African Leonard Cohen". He is increasingly asserting himself as an African artist assuming his rock influences, creator and artist in his own right and highly appreciated on the international music scene as Lokua Kanza or Richard Bona. Geoffrey Oryema leaves three children: Chantal Acoyo whom he had with his first wife Chantal, Oceng and Ajoline with his second wife Denise. Geoffrey Oryema lived in Ploemeur in Morbihan (Brittany, North West of France). with his wife Régine Martz.

Suffering from cancer Geoffrey Oryema died in Lorient on June 22, 2018. His ashes were then dispersed in Anaka, the land of his ancestors in northern Uganda that he evokes in his song Land of Anaka.
